Sorry folks. I was supposed to be working on my ongoing Star Wars Retrospective but I got distracted. :P My cousin and I were playing this early access game, Drive Beyond Horizons:

It's a combination of a post-apocalypse survival game and a road trip simulator; and it's surprisingly addictive! You spawn in a shack out in the middle of nowhere. Your goal: assemble a car and drive down a desert highway, scavenging for supplies along the way. You have to track your character's hunger, thirst, and need to piss (seriously!) while also contenting with your cars vitals, like gas, oil, and radiator fluid.

When I say "assemble your car", I mean you literally need to content with every car part imaginable! Just check out this little demo from the steam page:

To gather supplies, you have to stop at points of interest along the road. The world spawns via procedural generation, so you never know what you're gonna find and the next stop...nor how far away the next stop may be! Possible points of interest include:
  • Gas Stations: These quickly become your favorite, having the widest selection of food, drinks, gas/oil, and even car parts.
  • Bars: Offer food and drinks
  • Garages: Offering car parts, but also spray paints to customize
  • Slot Machine Traps: A lone slot machine surrounded by landmines. Not sure what to make of these :P
  • Farms: Have cows. Purpose unknown, we haven't explored that many
You've also gotta fight the occasional zombie or alien flying saucer!

We played two sessions. The first was the game's scenario mode. In this mode, you must drive 50km from your starting point, survive one night wherever you end up, then fight off a flying saucer with an RPG. It went smooth enough, as we had multiple decent loot drops in the early leg of the trip.

Our second game explored the infinite mode, just driving endlessly along the highway to see what we find. Here, things were more sparse. We drove for what felt like an eternity with nothing useful in sight, nearly dying of thirst. However, once we happened upon an old Trans-Am, the mood improved. We got the old girl reassembled and started flying down the highway, finding a bar, gas station, and garage in short order. AND we found the body of ANOTHER Trans Am just lying on the roadside!

Here's where the game started to click for me. We did some backtracking, gathered all the necessary parts, and soon both of us had a functioning car (and damn good ones!) As it happened, I scavenged a set of police lights earlier. And the garage happened to have some white paint, letting me assemble the beginnings of a police car:

There's a lot to be desired, of course. Next time I boot it up I'll be on the lookout for a matching hood, ram guard, and whatever other decals match the look. I love a game where you can give yourself personal goals like this. Once I'm done, we'll be able to do Smokey and the Bandit meets Walking Dead with a hint of Area 51!

So do I recommend everyone go buy it? I dunno yet. This is just my first impression. And, being Early Access, the game has a LOT of jank!

The combat is almost non-existent. We played for a total of four hours and only killed four zombies. That's one zombie an hour! The weapons also don't have functioning ammo counts as of this writing. I was stuffing my trunk with RPGs until I realized they have unlimited ammo, so I only needed to bring one per player! XD

Also, I punched a cow and got teleported back to spawn.

I'd say if you want an intricate car game with a lot of atmosphere, it's worth keeping on your radar. And if any of you wanna play it with me sometime, I'm down! Hell, I received it for free, so I should probably pass it on :P
