So as long as we're discussing musicians and groups with with extremely devoted fanbases, here's my obsession: OPETH
en.m.wikipedia.org
Opeth are hard to describe. On paper they're billed "a progressive death metal" act. What's progressive death metal? Good question.
Progressive Death Metal (Prog Metal for short) is a genre blending the heavy riffs and growls of Death Metal with the spacy-trippiness of Progressive Rock. You'll be banging your head to growls one minute and relaxing to soothing clean vocals the next.
Just try this one out:
Ghost of Perdition would be the quintessential Opeth song, having both heavy and slow sections. But even then, they never stop finding was to surprise people. In 2003 they released Damnation, an entire album of clean vocals, slow songs, and acoustic guitars:
This was actually my first Opeth song when Rosie linked to me the Damnation Wikipedia page on MSN Messenger with no context and the message "this album is so fucking good".
Then in 2011 they turned everything around and gave up Death Metal, becoming an entirely Prog Metal band, and they were STILL awesome!
(Yes, ALL of the songs so far are from the same band!)
This led to a rift in the fanbase, between those who wanted the Death Metal back and those who enjoyed the new prog era. As for me, I was late to the party, only becoming a fan in 2010. AND THEN, in 2024, they shadow-droped a new single bringing back their Death Metal roots:
I've got all their albums downloaded to nearly every device I own. I've been to three of their live shows. Just goes to show how one simple comment can affect a life so profoundly
So now I post here, with the hope that I've made another Opeth fan to pass it on!

Jesus, does anyone remember MSN Messenger?!?
